The US monetary authority reduced borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second rate cut this year during economic turbulence originating from the government closure and trade duties.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Moment for Central Bank
The move to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a range of 4% to 3.75% arrives at an unprecedented moment for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Fed Statement Notes Labor Market Shifts
In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the jobless rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release notes. “Price increases has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Government Shutdown Complicates Fed’s Job
The ongoing federal government shutdown, now among the lengthiest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Gathering of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as employees at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies BLS data to determine labor market conditions, including the count of new jobs added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The last jobs report was published in the beginning of last month, prior to the closure, and provided a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in the previous month.
The number of jobs added to the economy in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment crept up to four point three percent – the peak since three years ago.
Private Data Show Ongoing Decline
Though BLS was scheduled to publish last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its release when the closure started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor reported earlier this month that the business segment cut 32,000 jobs in last month, a sign that the job market is still decelerating.
“Both the supply and demand for labor has fallen quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, which he had earlier attributed comes from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s employment data has been paused, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that showed that prices are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose three percent over the past twelve months, the highest since January. In spring, the yearly price increase was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The Fed’s target inflation rate is two percent.
